SUMMARY:Indigenous Cumulative Effects and Reconciliation: Indigenous Governance in Action
DESCRIPTION:In honour of reconciliation month, the Indigenous Centre for Cumulative Effects is pleased to host a webinar with Angie Gillis and Jesse McCormick.\n\nNavigating regulatory change: Updates in federal regulatory processes\n\nMajor projects and Indigenous rights\n\n\nCreating a tiered regional process incorporating Mi’kmaw Ecological Knowledge\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\nAngeline Gillis is a proud Mi’kmaw woman and member of Eskasoni First Nation and Chair of the ICCE Board of Directors. Angeline is a practicing lawyer and has worked with The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM) since October 2011. In 2013, she became the Director of Environment and Natural Resources after successfully establishing several environmental programs for CMM’s Member Communities. In 2022, Angeline became The CMM’s Executive Director, the first woman to hold this position in the organization, that is the largest tribal council in the east. Within this role she provides oversight and guidance to all The CMM’s departments, over 180 staff members, numerous files, projects, and services offered to eight (8) M’ikmaw communities in Mainland Nova Scotia. Angeline’s career has been primarily focused on the inclusion of traditional knowledge and modern science. She is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Indigenous Centre of Cumulative Effects.\nJesse McCormick is a proud citizen of Canada, the Anishinabek Nation and the Oneida Nation (Wolf Clan) and committed to achieving reconciliation through the effective implementation of rights, treaties and responsibilities. Jesse’s practice focuses on First Nations empowerment in major project development, regulatory processes and treaty relationships. He works alongside Indigenous governments to ensure that large-scale infrastructure, energy and resource projects respect their rights and jurisdiction.
