This paper describes the multiple features of adaptive management (AM) and how it can be used in local to regional efforts to address cumulative effects assessment and management (CEAM). The topics addressed herein include: multiple definitions of AM; uncertainties related to CEAM; the context of an emerging NEPA model, and international and national practices; fundamental elements in an AM program; examples of AM within NEPA documents; incorporating AM within an EIS; getting started on planning an AM program; and conclusions and lessons learned. The information and case studies discussed have applicability for CEAM focused AM programs beyond the USA.
